EU encourages recycling of glass containers

According to the relevant European Union Directive, since June 30 this year, EU countries must impose new restrictions on the packaging of goods. Any packaging must not contain more than one ten-thousandths of heavy metals, otherwise it may not be sold. Subsequently, in view of the high lead content of recycled glass containers, the EU announced that it would allow glass containers to be free from the restrictions imposed by the heavy metal content regulations in several cases to encourage manufacturers to recycle glass. The main points of the relevant regulations are as follows:
1. If the content of heavy metals in glass bottles exceeds the prescribed standard, it is purely due to the addition of recycled materials, which can be exempted from the restriction of heavy metal content.
2. Do not intentionally add lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium to glass containers.
For this reason, Spain has drafted a bill that will remove restrictions on the content of heavy metals in glass containers.
In order to comply with the EU's implementation deadlines for packaging materials, the drafting of the Spanish bill is valid until June 30, 2006.
