G7 regular printing

After completing the test experiment of the G7 process, we obtained the characteristic data in the G7 production. With these characteristic data, high-quality and effective G7 printing can be performed.

The G7 printing press control method is similar to the traditional printing press control, taking CMYK's solid density reading as a basic starting point, and then using the midtone reading to control the tone change. The difference is that in G7, it is not controlled by the traditional CMYK TVI reading, but is replaced by the density value or chromaticity value of the bright tone range HR (50C, 40M, 40Y), and a 50K color patch. The calculation of the traditional printing relative contrast K value is replaced by the density of the dark contrast CS (75C, 66M, 66Y) and the color block of 75K.

G7's method is more reliable than TVI to control gray balance and brightness, and the change of mid-tone density or gray balance caused by the change of solid density will be smaller. However, it should be noted that the gray balance on the offset press is generally more unstable than when the TVI value is controlled alone, so the captain and quality personnel must be fully prepared throughout the printing process.

It should also be noted that the control method of this offset press is very new, the establishment time is not long, and there is no universally acceptable tolerance. Please be prepared to do multiple experiments to establish equipment, conditions and tolerance ranges.

Here is the beginning of a regular G7 printing.

(1) Turn the printing machine to the conventional ink level

Turn it on and print at the specified solid density or chroma. In the machine adjustment phase, the CIEL * a * b * value should be considered before the density value. After the adjustment work is completed, the relative density measurement is a valuable and efficient basis for printing press control. At this time, the relationship between density and chromaticity can be recorded to prepare for the subsequent debugging stage.

(2) Adjust HR and SC of gray balance and CMY

Adjust the solid density or other printing machine parameters within the allowable tolerances until the HR points (50C, 40M, 40Y) of the CMY three colors are as close as possible to the target value, density value or L * of the gray balance a *, b * Target value. Check the SC points (75C, 66M, 66Y) of the three colors of CMY as close as possible to their target values. Due to the changes in general printing presses, some compromise methods are necessary, but try to balance the errors between HR and SC color blocks as much as possible.

(3) Adjust the black version of HR and SC

Adjust the solid density of the black plate or other offset press parameters until the HR (50K) of the black plate is as close as possible to its target value. Check the black color patch (75K) as close as possible to its SC target value. Due to the changes in general printing presses, some compromise methods are necessary, but try to balance the errors between HR and SC color blocks as much as possible.

Throughout the printing process, it is necessary to maintain the same Lab value of CMY gray and 50K color patches at all times. If the gray balance and solid density change in similar directions, the gray balance can be restored by a small amount of solid density, see Figure 7. You can also use the previously recorded field density value to refer to the adjustment.
