On October 31, the reporter learned from the Institute of Optoelectronic Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "Photoelectric Institute") that the Solar High Resolution Optical Imaging Research Group recently used the multi-layer conjugate adaptive optics (Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics). The MCAO technology is docked with the 1m new vacuum solar telescope of the Yunnan Observatory to obtain high-resolution real-time images of the large field of view of the solar activity area, making China the third country to master the solar MCAO technology after the United States and Germany.
"Earth weather can be predicted by observing the atmosphere and clouds. The space in the universe also has weather. It is the basis of all space activities. It requires us to understand the solar activity more clearly." Zhang Lanqiang, a research team member, told reporters on the same day.
The MCAO technology realizes three-dimensional compensation by layered detection and correction of wavefront aberration caused by turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere, thereby eliminating the influence of atmospheric turbulence in a large field of view and obtaining an imaging effect close to the diffraction limit.
"A clearer understanding of solar activity is first of all to provide a basis for our space activities, because intense solar activity will bring a lot of electromagnetic radiation and nuclear radiation, causing irreversible damage to aerospace engineering." Zhang Lanqiang said that electromagnetic radiation, nuclear Radiation will also send powerful meta-charges to the power grids and pipelines on the ground, affecting the safety of transmission, oil and gas pipeline systems.
Solar activity observations are also an important basis for conducting solar physics research. "We all think of the source of solar energy as nuclear fusion, but this is actually only a guess. The solar energy transmission mechanism still needs us to continue observation. MCAO technology provides the possibility for this observation." Zhang Lanqiang said.
The research has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2017. In the future, the research team will deploy a dedicated MCAO system for the 1m new vacuum solar telescope at the Yunnan Observatory in five years to realize the application of this technology.
