Remember the photos of skirts that were popular in the circle of friends in the past few years? Did you see it in platinum or blue and black? At that time, I believe that many people will compete for each other. And now the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) is trying to spark a new controversy, even though it's very different from the blue and black of the last dress.
This is a system developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology called ColorFab that allows 3D printed objects to change color. This special fuel can be activated and turned off when exposed to different wavelengths of light.
Professor Stefanie Mueller of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said: "As the number of purchases, consumption, and wasted increases, we hope to find a more efficient way to update materials, which is largely the driving force behind this project. We have developed a system that can repeatedly change the color of 3D printed objects in 20 minutes. Specifically, we can use projectors and 3D printing inks to change colors under ultraviolet and visible light."
According to Professor Mueller, this technology allows consumers to change the color of different garments, so that they can customize their products in real time according to their different configurations or retail stores, so that consumers can see different colors of goods. Now, according to the current research and development results, it takes 23 minutes to change the color of an object, but as the progress of the project development increases, the speed of the entire color change can be accelerated. Researchers hope that one day they will be able to change the color of objects as quickly as they do in movies. In this case, we only need to touch the target lightly to change their color.
"This is currently a prototype phase of research, so there are no commercial plans yet," Mueller said. “Next, we want to speed up the printing process by using more powerful light, and it is possible to add more light to the ink to accommodate the new dyes. We also want to improve the color granularity so that we can print more subtle pattern."
