In the early 1980s, the French company developed magnetic printing technology. In 1986, it launched a commercial magnetic printing press. Now its subsidiary NIPSON specializes in producing special magnetic printing presses.
(1) Composition and characteristics of special magnetic printers
The key components of the magnetic printing press are the engine, the writing head, the magnetic powder, the paper path, etc. The writing head is the component imaged by the magnetic recording technology. On the writing head, there is a row of tiny electromagnets. These electromagnets are selectively energized to generate a latent image on the surface of a rotating hard metal roller. These latent images are then developed by exposing the magnetic powder. Finally, transfer this image to paper or other printing materials to obtain prints printed using magnetic printing technology, as shown in Figure 2-47.
Compared with other printing methods, magnetic printing technology has unique advantages. Since the magnetic printer has a simple structure, the reliability is good, the printing speed is high, the use is flexible and convenient, and it can be printed on a variety of materials. In the future, this technology will have greater development.
At present, the maximum print speed of dedicated magnetic printing is over 700 impressions per minute, and it is possible to print constantly changing data on various materials. Through an open UNIX-based OPENPAGE client server, dedicated magnetic printers can accept information from various locations. Through the AFP advanced function printing interface, special magnetic printers can be compatible with IBM and AFP environments.
The special magnetic printer can fix the image on the substrate at a temperature of 50 °C. Therefore, it will not cause any damage to printed materials such as windowed envelopes, labels, plastic or carbonless copy paper.
(B) The type of special magnetic printer
1. Double engine
There are two engines, one for printing the front and the other for the back. Both engines are running at full speed. Each page prints 400 sheets of A4 with double-sided images.
2. Single engine
This type of engine printer, or SED for short, can print 400 pages of A4 format images per minute on a printing press, which is much faster than the current sheet-fed presses, as shown in Figure 2-38.
The NIPSON 7000 press can have the following configurations:

2Token Ring or X25 (connected via NIPSON's OPENPAGE client server);
