NJU_724X All-Solid-State Dual Linear Polarization Doppler Weather Radar

Function and Role Introduction

The NJU_724X all-solid-state dual linear polarization Doppler weather radar is a state-of-the-art X-band radar system that combines solid-state transmitter technology with dual-polarization capabilities. Developed jointly by the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Nanjing University and the 724th Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry, this radar represents a significant advancement in meteorological observation systems.

This radar employs advanced technologies such as pulse compression and pulse blanking to enhance its performance. It also incorporates virtual radar signal processing techniques to achieve high-resolution and high-reliability data collection. To minimize same-frequency interference, the system features a variable frequency function, allowing it to adjust its operating frequency within a certain range. This flexibility improves the accuracy and reliability of weather observations.

The radar has a maximum observation range of 150 km and can provide quantitative weather estimates up to 100 km. It is equipped with two horizontal and vertical transmitting and receiving channels, enabling the measurement of key parameters such as reflectivity (Z), radial velocity (Vr), spectral width (σ), and various polarization variables including differential reflectivity (Zdr), differential phase shift (ΦDP), specific differential phase (KDP), and correlation coefficient (CC).

Since its successful development, the radar has been installed at the Geoscience Observation Base on the Xianlin Campus of Nanjing University. It serves as an essential tool for teaching and research in radar meteorology. The system is widely used in undergraduate and graduate courses related to atmospheric science, providing students with hands-on experience in dual-polarized radar applications.

Through practical experiments, students learn about the working principles of dual-polarized radars and their role in identifying severe weather, determining precipitation types (such as hail or rain), and estimating quantitative precipitation (QPE). The radar also encourages students to explore radar signal processing algorithms and develop secondary meteorological products through programming, fostering critical thinking and independent research skills.
