NJU_724X All-Solid-State Dual Linear Polarization Doppler Weather Radar

Function and Role Introduction

The NJU_724X is an advanced X-band weather radar system that combines solid-state technology with dual linear polarization capabilities. Developed jointly by the School of Atmospheric Sciences at Nanjing University and the 724th Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry, this radar represents a significant advancement in meteorological observation. It features a next-generation solid-state transmitter, along with pulse compression and pulse-blind technologies, which enhance its performance and reliability. The radar also employs virtual signal processing methods to achieve high-resolution data acquisition.

To minimize same-frequency interference, the radar includes a frequency-tuning function, allowing it to adjust its operating frequency within a certain range. This flexibility improves its ability to accurately observe weather phenomena. With a detection range of up to 150 km, the radar can provide quantitative estimates of weather events within 100 km. It has two horizontal and vertical transmitting and receiving channels, enabling the measurement of key parameters such as reflectivity (Z), radial velocity (Vr), spectral width (σ), and various polarization variables including differential reflectivity (Zdr), differential phase shift (ΦDP), specific differential phase (KDP), and correlation coefficient (CC).

Since its successful development, the NJU_724X has been installed at the Geoscience Observation Base on the Xianlin Campus of Nanjing University. It serves as an essential tool for teaching and research in radar meteorology. The system supports undergraduate and graduate students in exploring the practical applications of dual-polarized weather radars, helping them understand how these systems detect severe weather, identify precipitation types (such as hail or rain), and estimate rainfall quantitatively (QPE). It also encourages students to experiment with radar signal processing algorithms and develop secondary meteorological products through hands-on learning and programming.

This radar not only enhances students' understanding of meteorological principles but also fosters critical thinking and independent research skills. It plays a vital role in bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world applications in atmospheric science.
