Preservatives are hidden in the best-selling mask

Among the most popular skin care products for urban white-collar workers, the sales and attention of facial mask products have always been among the best. Many international brands' popular facial masks attract many women and even men's consumers with their high nutritional positioning and immediate quick effect. Recently, however, the Hong Kong Consumer Council has found that more than half of the products tested for allergic preservatives in the survey of 30 best-selling masks on the market. Long-term use may cause allergic skin diseases such as rash.

Allergy sufferers use a preservative-containing mask with caution

According to the Hong Kong Consumer Council announced on July 15, most of the 30 masks tested this time are international brands familiar to consumers. Prices range from HK$30 to RMB400, and 17 masks contain sensitization. The preservative "paraben" ranges from 0.01% to 0.3%.

Among them, Kiehl's star brand "Kiehl's", which is known as the most popular brand, has the highest level of preservatives, such as the "Deep Moisturizing Mask" of the big-name Chanel, and the "E-E" of the British "The Body Shop". The deep moisturizing mask and the “watery moisturizing mask” of the popular brand L'Oreal are also on the list.

According to the Hong Kong Consumer Council, there is no standard content of preservatives in cosmetics in Hong Kong. If the "Hygienic Standards for Cosmetics" promulgated by the Mainland is used as a reference standard, the preservative content of these mask products is still within the upper limit of 0.8.

Xu Shuyuan, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Consumer Council's propaganda group, publicly stated in the interview that the five common paraben preservatives found in the test are not very toxic, so cosmetic manufacturers are generally used to prevent microbial growth during product storage. . He said that at present, the European Union, the United States and the Chinese mainland have allowed the use of parabens in cosmetics. The 17 products announced this time are not content exceeding the legal standards, and the general use is not a problem.

“However, if consumers are allergic to such preservatives, special attention should be paid to whether or not the paraben label indicates p-hydroxybenzoate. Long-term use may cause preservatives to remain on the skin surface, resulting in contact dermatitis.”
