57-13-6, urea, urea experiment description

Urea, with the CAS number 57-13-6, is a common organic compound widely used in various industries, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Its chemical name is carbonyldiamide, and it is also known by several other names such as urea, carbamide, Harnstoff, Basodexan, and Ureaphil. Urea has the molecular formula CH₄N₂O and a molecular weight of approximately 60.06 g/mol. This product is available in AR (Analytical Reagent) grade, ensuring high purity with a minimum content of 99.0%. It meets strict quality standards, including low levels of impurities: chloride ≤ 0.0003%, sulfate ≤ 0.001%, and heavy metals (as Pb) ≤ 0.0002%. The biuret content is limited to ≤0.2%, and the ammonia content is kept below 0.005%. Urea appears as white, square prismatic crystals or a fine powder. It has a distinct ammonia-like odor and a slightly salty taste. When heated above its melting point, it decomposes into biuret, ammonia, and cyanuric acid. In terms of solubility, urea dissolves well in water, with 1 gram dissolving in 1 mL of water. It is also soluble in 95% ethanol (10 mL), boiling 95% ethanol (1 mL), absolute ethanol (20 mL), methanol (6 mL), and glycerol (2 mL). However, it is almost insoluble in ether and chloroform. The pH of a 10% aqueous solution is around 7.2, making it slightly acidic. The relative density of the aqueous solution (W/W, d) is an important parameter for quality control. This product is commonly used as a nitrogen source in fertilizers, a moisturizer in skincare products, and a reagent in laboratory settings. Due to its versatility and high purity, urea remains a key ingredient in many industrial and scientific applications.
