Deborah Wickerham

Winning the 2010 Gustav Ohaus Award Deborah Wickerham, a fifth-grade teacher at Chamberlin Hill Intermediate School in Findlay, Ohio, won this year's Gustav OHAUS Award (Gustav OHAUS Award) Science Teaching Innovation Award.

For the fall of her teaching project, Halloween Pumpkin, she used a fresh pumpkin to prove two abstract concepts, the decomposition of mass and the law of conservation of mass.

Through a series of activities and observations, students record data and use Ohaus Scout® Pro to weigh the quality of the pumpkin to determine if there is any weight change throughout the decomposition process

For her winning project, Ms. Wickerham won the round-trip airfare and hotel accommodation and the $ 1,500 cash prize at the National Science Teachers Association Science Education Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her school will receive a $ 1,000 Ohaus product.

For nearly 40 years, the annual Gustav OHAUS Award (Gustav OHAUS Award) project recognizes outstanding teachers, their teaching methods or learning activities have the potential to improve science teaching at the elementary, junior high, high school and university levels.
