Wine packaging requires 7 million trees a year

According to data from the International Grape and Wine Organization (OIV), by 2017, the consumption capacity of the Chinese wine market will reach 2.827 billion liters, and the total consumption will reach more than 93.8 billion yuan, a scale close to 100 billion yuan. The huge wine market will bring massive amounts of packaging waste.

Research completed by the International Wine and Spirit Research Institute IWSR also shows that since 2014, China has consumed 1.8 billion bottles of wine each year. More than half of them use 900 million bottles of wine each year to use traditional paper bags, wooden boxes and leather boxes. More than 1.2 million trees are needed each year for a total of 68,000 tons of paper for 900 million paper bags. In this quantity, 1/10 of the wines will be packed in more luxurious leather boxes and wooden boxes, and nearly 100 million wooden boxes will consume 1.95 million cubic meters, which will require 6 million trees.
