If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that wedding season is in full bloom, and for custom-made bridal businesses, it’s an incredibly hectic yet rewarding period. We’re all familiar with the stunning displays of wedding goodies in chic boutiques, eagerly awaited by brides-to-be. However, behind the scenes, many of these exquisite creations are often mass-produced by large factories and sent out to retailers. This doesn’t diminish their charm, though; ensuring safe transportation for delicate items like these is paramount.

Today, we have a special case where a client is facing a tricky packaging issue involving one of the most important elements of a wedding ceremony: the cake. Yes, you heard right—more than one cake! Let’s dive into Clara’s predicament.

Dear Doctor,

I’m a manufacturer of premium wedding cakes, and I’ve just signed a deal with a prestigious department store. My cakes weigh around 16 kilograms each and measure approximately 45 x 30 x 30 centimeters. They need to look elegant but also be well-protected within strong outer packaging.

Since these cakes are shipped via pallets, and I want to maximize space and cut down on shipping expenses, I plan to fit three cakes onto each pallet. Therefore, the packaging must be robust enough to support stacking while keeping everything securely in place.

A single damaged cake could jeopardize my contract, and given how time-consuming and challenging it is to recreate a wedding cake, I can’t afford delays in fulfilling other orders. Could you suggest some reliable packaging solutions?

Hello Clara,

Wedding cakes are always heavier than they look, aren’t they? All that rich fruitcake and frosting add quite a bit of weight! I completely understand your concern about preserving the integrity of each cake, especially since this is a brand-new partnership. A damaged product wouldn’t exactly set the right tone for such an important collaboration.

For presentation purposes, start by placing the cake inside a white cardboard box, which conveys elegance and sophistication—a classic choice for luxury baked goods. As for external packaging, I strongly recommend our extra-heavy-duty boxes. These are the heavyweight champions of packaging! Specifically, the XHD3 model fits your cake dimensions perfectly and can handle up to 231 kilograms of weight, meaning it could theoretically support stacking up to 14 cakes without collapsing. Made from 6.5-millimeter-thick BC flute corrugated board, these boxes provide excellent shock absorption and strength.

To keep the boxes stable on the pallet, you might also consider using stretch film. We offer several options, but for this application, I’d recommend extended-core 17-micron wrap. Its longer core makes it easier to apply, while medium-duty pallet wrap is ideal for securing medium-sized loads. This film ensures the boxes remain fixed during transit and adds an additional layer of protection against punctures or scratches.
