During our recent fire starter review, one of my favorite "under the radar" products was the Fire-Fast Trekker. While the Light My Fire Swedish Firesteel took the overall win, the Trekker stood out as the only fire steel we tested that truly felt like it was made from real European ferrocerium. However, we were hesitant to recommend it due to its large size and the space it takes up in a pack.
Now, Fire-Fast has expanded its lineup with two new, more compact versions: the mid-sized Kamper and the ultra-compact Fire Fly. These additions make the brand more versatile for different carrying needs and situations.
All three tools follow a similar design: an Austrian ferrocerium rod is paired with a large magnesium rod and glued into an African hardwood handle. The magnesium can be shaved into a tinder pile to help catch sparks, and the wooden handle itself can also serve as a backup tinder source if needed.
The **Fire Fly** is the smallest of the three and is still not listed on their website yet. Even though it's smaller than its siblings, it’s still bigger than the LMF Firesteel shown in the next photo. It’s perfect for those who want a lightweight, portable option without sacrificing too much functionality.
The **Kamper** is the middle-sized model and comes with a long lanyard loop, suggesting it’s meant to be worn around the neck. While the extra cordage is useful, I think Fire-Fast could consider using a survival paracord with some jute twine, like the UST ParaTinder we highlighted in our best paracord review. That would add even more versatility in a survival situation.
Finally, the **Trekker**, which I’m told is an upgraded version of the original, may have already been part of our earlier review. I couldn’t tell the difference between the one I tested and the one I own. There are minor differences in the carving and size of the handle, which makes sense given that they’re handcrafted rather than mass-produced. But functionally, they seem identical.
I weighed each of these tools to give you a better idea of how much they’ll add to your pack:
- **Trekker:** 4oz
- **Kamper:** 2oz
- **Fire Fly:** 1.2oz
For comparison, the LMF Firesteel weighs 1.4oz. So while the Trekker is significantly heavier, the Kamper and Fire Fly are only slightly bulkier but not much heavier. The LMF contains more ferro material than the Kamper or Fire Fly, but the Trekker actually has more than the LMF. This means that for long-term survival scenarios, the Trekker might be the better choice, but for short-term emergencies, the added features of the Fire-Fast models give them an edge.
I’ve added the Trekker to my bug-out bag and plan to include the others in my wife’s and kids’ packs as well. I didn’t replace the LMFs, just added these alongside them. Fire is so critical, I believe even the larger model is worth the extra weight and space.
I’m considering attaching the Fire Fly to one of my survival knife sheaths instead of the LMF, but I’m not sure it’s the best idea. Leaving it exposed on the side of a sheath might expose it to the elements. I’d prefer to keep it in a dry place inside a pack or a dedicated storage spot.
Even if you don’t want to carry them in a pack, these tools are great to keep in your car as a backup for your go-to Bic lighter. I’d also consider carrying one of the smaller ones in a briefcase or backpack if I commuted regularly.
### About Fire-Fast
To be honest, when I first ordered the Fire-Fast Trekker for our big fire starter contest, I wasn’t expecting much. The Fire-Fast website only had two products at the time, and I assumed this was another fake bushcraft product from a Chinese company trying to pass itself off as an American small business.
But I was pleasantly surprised. The Trekker turned out to be my favorite find of the entire review.
A few weeks later, one of the owners reached out to let us know they're a real husband-and-wife team based in California, and they assemble all their products by hand right here in the US. They confirmed that the ferrocerium they use is indeed from Austria, which matched what I found during my testing.
As shown in the image above, the genuine Austrian ferro rods have a distinct striped wear pattern. Only the Trekker and the LMF exhibited this, which further confirmed their authenticity.
It’s rare to come across companies that deliver on their promises, especially in the outdoor gear world where fakes are common. And it’s even better when those companies are based in the US and take pride in their craftsmanship.
Fire-Fast is a welcome addition to the market — reliable, functional, and built with care.
