Christmas Tree Card Craft For Kids

I’ve been feeling less enthusiastic about Christmas cards lately. They seem overly pricey and often end up being discarded, contributing to waste. This year, I decided it was time for a change. I wanted my daughters to create all our cards and also make gifts for their family. We needed something simple that they could produce in large quantities quickly. Luckily, my daughter Charlotte came up with a brilliant idea—using a real piece of Christmas foliage to make a Christmas tree card. I loved the concept and thought it would not only serve as a charming card but also be perfect for children aged 3 and above to make, with varying levels of adult supervision. This craft requires just a few basic materials: - A twig from a pine tree - Blank cards - Sticky gems or sequins - Stars or other embellishments - Washi tape - Glue, pens, and scissors We started by selecting a Christmas tree-shaped twig from a pine tree and glued it onto the center of the card. Next, we decorated the edges of the card with sticky gems or sequins. To add a touch of festivity, we placed a gummed star at the top of the tree, though you could also draw one on with a pen. For an extra layer of creativity, we used washi tape or colored pens to outline the card. Charlotte took charge of placing the gems around the edges, which turned out beautifully. I opted for colors that complemented each other, although I later realized that using a silver star instead of gold might have made the design even more cohesive. If you're planning this activity with a group of children, you’ll want to prepare by cutting several twigs ahead of time. Younger kids will need more guidance, so consider helping them apply the washi tape or using pre-patterned backgrounds. You could also enhance the design by painting a snowy backdrop or drawing a festive house, adding paper-cut presents beneath the tree, or incorporating additional embellishments. One of the things I love about this project is its versatility. You can create cards of various shapes and sizes. I enjoy making small cards that double as gift tags, and this idea works perfectly for that purpose. Charlotte came up with a sleek, elongated card with a striking red background that I found particularly appealing. Here’s a video tutorial that walks you through the entire process: [Embed video] Overall, this project is a fun and creative way to involve the kids in the holiday spirit while producing something meaningful and eco-friendly. It's an activity that brings together crafting, learning, and family bonding—all wrapped up in a simple yet beautiful Christmas tradition.
