How to use the balance

Electronic analytical balances are essential tools in quantitative analysis, playing a critical role in ensuring accurate and reliable results. A thorough understanding of their operation and proper handling are key to achieving precision. There are various types of analytical balances available, including traditional mechanical balances, semi-automatic or automatic electro-optical projection damping balances, and modern electronic analytical balances. This guide provides detailed instructions on how to use an electronic analytical balance and highlights important safety precautions.

1. Before starting, ensure the balance is placed on a level surface. Use the leveling feet to adjust the balance until the bubble in the spirit level is centered. This ensures stable and accurate measurements.

2. Check that the power supply voltage matches the requirements of the balance. If necessary, use a voltage stabilizer to protect the instrument from power fluctuations. Allow the balance to warm up for the recommended time before use, as this helps stabilize internal components and improve accuracy.

3. Once the balance has warmed up, turn it on. The device will automatically calibrate itself, adjusting both sensitivity and the zero point. Wait for the stability indicator (such as a “stable” message or a blinking symbol) to appear before beginning any weighing process.

4. Place a clean weighing container, such as a weighing bottle or weighing paper, on the balance pan. Close the side door to prevent air currents from affecting the measurement. Press the tare button gently to reset the display to zero. Then, carefully add the substance to be weighed until the desired weight is reached, as indicated by the display.

5. When the “→” symbol appears in the lower left corner of the display, the reading is stable and ready to be recorded. This indicates that the balance has reached equilibrium and the displayed value is accurate.

6. After completing the weighing, remove the sample from the balance, close the side door, and turn off the power. It's also important to record the usage in the logbook to maintain proper documentation and traceability.

Precautions:

1. Always place the balance on a solid, vibration-free table—preferably a cement or wooden surface. The room should be clean, dry, and maintained at a constant temperature. Avoid placing the balance in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as these can affect its performance.

2. When weighing, always open the side door to place or remove samples. Keep the front door closed during readings to prevent air movement from disturbing the balance. The front door should only be used when performing maintenance or cleaning.

3. If the balance is not used frequently, it should be powered on once a week and allowed to warm up for about two hours. This helps maintain its internal components in good working condition.

4. A desiccant, such as silica gel, should be kept inside the balance chamber to absorb moisture. Replace or bake the desiccant if it changes color, indicating it has absorbed water.

5. Never weigh volatile, corrosive, or strongly acidic/alkaline substances directly on the balance pan. Always use a covered weighing vessel to prevent contamination or damage to the instrument.

By following these guidelines, users can ensure accurate measurements and prolong the lifespan of the electronic analytical balance. Proper care and regular maintenance are essential for maintaining the reliability and precision of this critical laboratory equipment.
