Many artists, such as painters and sculptors, often rely on their imagination to bring their visions to life. However, some artists depend more on real-world objects, and even the most imaginative creators are usually inspired by reality. This is especially true when it comes to human anatomy, which has long been a fundamental element in artistic expression.
Today, there's a company called Anatomy360 that uses digital technology to develop standardized human reference models for artists. The human body is one of the most commonly used subjects in sculpture, painting, and other visual arts due to its natural aesthetic appeal. For artists, finding the perfect model for a project can be challenging—especially when they need someone to hold a pose for extended periods, often without clothes. That’s where Anatomy360 and its 3D modeling and 3D printing technology come into play, offering a practical and accurate alternative.
So how does Anatomy360 work? Their team uses high-resolution 3D scanners to capture individuals in various poses, ensuring smooth and natural movement. They scan a large number of people and then use a topology conversion tool called Wrap X to create a basic grid. After that, their 3D animation software, Lightwave 3D, morphs the models and produces detailed 3D printed versions.
"The biggest advantage of using scanning over traditional methods is accuracy," said Anatomy360 on their blog. "These are real people, captured in real poses and printed with 100% precision."
Once the models are created, the team selects six different poses for each individual, resulting in a set of six 3D-printed figures that represent different actions. These models are incredibly detailed, so much so that you can see tiny pores on the skin. This level of detail helps artists study anatomy from multiple angles and in various positions.
Although Anatomy360 is still in the testing phase, they're actively gathering feedback from artists to determine if there's a demand for this kind of product. According to the company, while 3D printing currently provides excellent results, they plan to switch to injection molding for mass production if the response is positive. This could make these realistic anatomical models more accessible and affordable for artists around the world.
