An Intimate Look At The World Of Decoration With Sandra Benhamou

Sandra Benhamou exudes an aura of calm and warmth. Born in Paris, with Italian-Tunisian roots, and having spent a significant portion of her life in the United States, Sandra Benhamou approaches her work with a deep sense of intuition. A passionate collector of contemporary art and photography, with a love for cinema, she draws inspiration from the great masters of Italian architecture and design, particularly Carlo Scarpa. Whether it's a Haussmann apartment, a country home, or seaside architecture, Sandra's designs are guided by the history of the location and its unique light, combined with the lifestyle of her clients. Each space she creates feels personal and thoughtfully crafted, reflecting both the environment and the individuals who inhabit it.

Known for reimagining circulation within spaces to enhance fluidity and foster conviviality, Sandra develops environments that are as sophisticated as they are refined. Her color palette leans toward muted tones—ochre, sand, cream—accented with warm hues of yellow, orange, and khaki to add depth and character. She favors natural materials such as elm, linen, and travertine, yet she enjoys contrasting these elements to create dynamic tension. For instance, in a kitchen, aged nickel doors might softly complement a stainless steel countertop, while wild silk upholstery adds a touch of softness and elegance to a minimalist living room. No two projects are alike; there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. This same philosophy applies to her eclectic selection of objects, where she blends vintage finds from flea markets with modern pieces, showcasing her keen eye for the art market.

Beyond her private client projects, Sandra Benhamou has undertaken numerous public commissions. In 2015, she transformed the former aquarium in Dinard into the luxurious 5-star hotel, Le Castelbrac, infusing it with Art Deco charm. Her playful take on bohemian chic is evident in the rooms of the Hôtel Belloy, while her design of the Blitz Society, a Left Bank chess-themed bar, highlights her versatility. She also designed the showroom for fabric designer Métaphores. Always seeking new challenges, Sandra is currently working on Casa Barbara, an innovative senior residence in Levallois-Perret, in collaboration with the Trigano Group and Korian. From communal spaces to individual apartments, the gym to the salon, every detail reflects her vision of creating warm, inviting environments that break away from traditional retirement home aesthetics.

Since the early days of her career, Sandra has designed custom Furniture for her projects. Starting in 2021, she began releasing full collections. Her debut collection, Ginger, inspired by Martin Scorsese's film Casino, includes a cabinet bar, dressing table, and armchairs crafted from stainless steel, brass, and mirrors. Her second collection, Marfa, named after the small Texas town where Donald Judd worked in the 1970s, embraces a more minimalist aesthetic. Sandra’s Folk-inspired pieces combine elm and cork, pine and raffia, ash and cherry, creating subtle juxtapositions. Every object, whether forged or carved, is handmade by skilled artisans and produced in limited editions. To showcase her furniture, Sandra curates immersive settings, drawing on her talent for temporary architecture. She recently designed the décor for the Elle Décoration café at PAD 2022, focusing on a travel theme.
