On July 27, 2015, the China Chamber of Commerce for Watches and Eyewear, along with the China Watch and Eyewear Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, held a press conference in Beijing to announce their strategic cooperation with Taobao (China) Software Co., Ltd. This event aimed to promote a network integrity management strategy and strengthen collaboration across various sectors. Representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, the China Consumer Association, industry associations, Taobao, the Quality Inspection Center, and several commercial enterprises attended the meeting.
A key focus of the collaboration was to enhance trust in online transactions by establishing quality standards for second-hand watch auctions on Taobao’s platform. As Asia’s largest e-commerce marketplace, Taobao aims to foster a more transparent and secure online environment for consumers. The partnership will involve setting clear guidelines for the inspection and certification of pre-owned watches, ensuring greater transparency and reliability in the second-hand market.
The Quality Inspection Center highlighted the growing importance of the second-hand watch industry, which has become an essential part of modern consumer culture. They emphasized the need for standardized procedures in the inspection and authentication of used timepieces. By working with Taobao, they aim to build a more trustworthy ecosystem that benefits both buyers and sellers.
The China Consumer Association expressed concerns about the challenges facing e-commerce, including counterfeit products, deceptive practices, and unfair terms. These issues have undermined consumer confidence and damaged the reputation of online markets. The association stressed that building an honest and reliable digital marketplace is crucial for social harmony and economic growth. The collaboration between Taobao and the Quality Inspection Center is seen as a positive step toward achieving this goal.
The Ministry of Commerce supported the initiative, noting that it aligns with national strategies for e-commerce development and credit system construction. The partnership is expected to set a benchmark for integrity and self-regulation in the online retail sector, contributing to a more sustainable and trustworthy digital economy.
During the event, both parties signed the "Network Integrity Management Proposal," calling on all online platforms, second-hand retailers, and members of the public to adhere strictly to laws and regulations. They pledged to combat fake goods, ensure product authenticity, and continuously improve the integrity management system. This joint effort marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the online watch auction market.
