Royal British Forces Training Manual (Chapter 5)

The instructors are looking for many different qualities, but the most important advantage they want to pursue is the kind of quality that no matter how difficult things are, they will never bow to their difficulties.

This may be the most dynamic aspect of the personalization of the members of the special air service force.

Relative to physical strength to do the spiritual perseverance. For those who observe discipline and commitment, many people can achieve the physical qualities of a special air force team member. What it needs is only a few months of hard work. And the determination to be optimistic and not overwhelmed can allow you to achieve extraordinary achievements when others have given up. Former special air service soldier Chris Ryan was once a member of the 20th "eight-person" group and was ordered to infiltrate Iraq during the Gulf War. When many of them were finally captured and tortured by Iraq, Chris Ryan managed to escape and walk across the desert to a 300-kilometre safe area, which required extraordinary spiritual courage. In his evaluation of this great process, we can see from his book “Survivors” how he evaluated the individual perseverance of the special air force soldiers:

Establishment of the 22nd Special Air Transport Mission

The existence of the 22nd special air service mission in the UK today should be attributed to the foresight of one person. He is Brigadier General Mike Calvert. The former Allied Army soldier (they fought in the Burmese army front from 1943 to 1945) and Guerrilla Warrior Specialist, Calwout, has been directing a special air service brigade until the 1945 downsizing of the special air force. . Calvert was asked to study how effective anti-British communist military and social uprisings. Calvotte’s final proposal resulted in the birth of a Malayan commando team. The force he led was a small, elite force that dealt primarily with jungle fighting. The assault team gradually exerted some influence on terrorists, but when the 21st special air force regiment (this unit is retained as a regional force after the reduction) and other elite personnel of World War II joined the force, its The influence rose rapidly. Finally, when the special air force was retained as a permanent establishment of the British Army during the post-war period, this Malaya commando was designated as the 22nd special air traffic mission. When the troops were reorganized, Calvert had already returned to the United Kingdom, where he left a permanent legacy for the unit, which was the selection process he had designed. It is still the basis for the training of troops.

"Before the Gulf War, if someone told me that I could walk for seven consecutive nights in the enemy-occupied area, without food and without water, without enough clothes, and I couldn't sleep or find a place to rest. 300 kilometers, I certainly wouldn't believe it.When I had to do it, I succeeded... In 1991, my physical fitness situation was at its peak and I was given me in various skills, perseverance, morale instinct, and special air force training. The inner power helped me succeed."

("Survivors", Chris Ryan, London: published by Henoch Publishing, 1995)

We see that physical health is only one factor in Ryan's ability to complete this incredible desert trip. Similarly, what is more important is that the mental qualities like "strength" and "mood instinct" (this is not a coincidence, the soldiers of many special air force troops have been or have become athletes with great morale) and "inner motivation." As Ryan said, it was the training of special air force troops that provided him with these qualities, but when he was able to successfully pass special airline selections, he certainly had a certain degree of such qualities.

The selection process for special air services is cruel in the world. For a selection of 150 participants each time, usually fewer than 15 people can stay. The instructors are seeking many different qualities, but one of the most important qualities they value is the quality that will not succumb to the predicament no matter how difficult the environment is. When many soldiers began to participate in the selection of special air services, they considered themselves to be the candidate. They only discovered that they had been wrong after weeks of unimaginable physical torture, lack of sleep, and high-intensity decision-making that made them unbearable. Those who can persist will rely on their inherent qualities to overcome their predicament.
