Some of the quality problems of finished products or semi-finished products that appear in bookbinding processing are caused by improper use of adhesives. Therefore, understanding the type, raw material, performance, and purpose of binding materials used for binding improves the understanding of bonding materials is a key to improving the quality of books and periodicals.

Most of the binding materials used for binding are fluid-bonded paper, fabrics, cardboard, etc., which are almost all microporous and permeable materials (except for plastics). The bonding of microporous materials requires the adhesive to have proper viscosity and wet adhesion. Both are indispensable for good bonding results.

Different adherends should use different adhesives

Bookbinding is a more complex type of work. There are many types of machines, and the types and binding properties of different types of materials in the form of the process are different. Some work products require this kind of binder and some of the work requires the binder to have a large viscosity (thickness). Some viscosity needs to be small (lean). Need to use a large viscosity and use of a small viscosity adhesive will cause uneven bonding, wrinkles, and even the opposite effect. Waste adhesives increase processing costs. Therefore, different adhesives should use different types, properties, viscosity adhesives, as listed in Table 1.

The binding quality problems caused by the use of adhesives are almost always present in every binding step of the binding. Some of them bring unnecessary rework or waste to the next process, which causes the quality of the book to be damaged after being processed.

The adhesives with high viscosity and high consistency have many solid contents, low water cohesion, and high bond strength and are easy to set after drying. At the same time, it should also be noted that thick adhesives are suitable for work materials with a small area and large adhesion force. The use of adhesives to connect books, the most important thing is to select the appropriate adhesive species and viscosity, viscosity, etc., based on the texture of the adherend and bonding process.
