Liquid crystal technology promises Masdar PV module efficiency up to 14%

Abstract: A research and development collaboration between Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) and silicon-based thin film manufacturer Masdar PV may increase module efficiency by more than 20%.

HZB's research on thin-film crystalline silicon created by liquid phase crystallization (LPC) has produced an open circuit voltage of 582 mV for crystalline silicon on glass coated with a 10 ?? m silicon layer, paving the way for greatly improving the conversion efficiency of components.

Professor Bernd Rech of HZB said: "Thin-film crystalline silicon-based photovoltaics can achieve high efficiency and low material cost. Therefore, it combines the advantages of existing silicon wafer crystalline silicon photovoltaic and thin-film silicon technologies. In addition, Thin-film crystalline silicon alone enables a large number of available materials. We believe that higher efficiency can be achieved than silicon wafer crystalline silicon technology. On a long-term basis, we aim to achieve thin-film silicon technology beyond 20%. "

Initially, HZB / PvcomB and Masdar PV were designed to combine LPC technology to produce a module efficiency of 14%, although collaborators only stated that this is a near-term goal.

Professor Rutger Schlatmann, head of the PvcomB technology transfer department at HZB, added: "We expect thin-film crystalline silicon solar cells to achieve 14% efficiency in the short to medium term, and we believe in the possibility of rapid technological development in this area."

Masdar PV said it plans to transfer the technology to existing production facilities and use the technology for its ultra-large (5.7m ??) substrates in the future.

Tushita Ranchan, general manager of Masdar PV, said: "Investing in the research and development of next-generation thin-film silicon technology on glass to produce photovoltaic panels will enable us to better compete with existing crystal photovoltaic manufacturers, who rely on economies of scale rather than important skill improved."
