Children's meningitis is associated with educational achievement in adulthood

The author, Dr. Casper Roed of Copenhagen University Hospital, said this association is more relevant in Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae infections. For epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, the lower educational achievement may be related to the family. Dr. Roed said, "Nerve damage after meningitis has been studied for a long time, but our follow-up time for patients is longer than previous experimental studies, and we found some significant changes after many years of disease."

He explained that previous studies have evaluated the educational achievement of patients with meningitis in childhood a few years later, probably at the end of high school, and found that achievement has decreased. But the current study was followed until the patient was 35 years old, so it can be shown that these devastating effects are obvious for a long period of time. He said: "Our results are simple but meaningful."

Because hearing loss sometimes occurs after meningitis, children may be routinely followed up for hearing until 2-3 years after the onset, but generally not longer than this. Dr. Roed added: "However, we found that other neurological problems may also occur, some minor brain damage, but these will not show for many years. I recommend to parents of children with any type of meningitis, especially It is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Be vigilant when monitoring their progress in the school. If you have any disadvantages, you should seek help in a timely manner. "

Dr. Roed said that the three types of meningitis are different, epidemic meningococcal meningitis is the most serious, and the acute phase is often lethal, but if it can survive in the acute phase, it will not cause a significant long-term Brain Injury.

Meningococci are very aggressive in the acute phase, leading to sepsis, accompanied by vasodilation and low blood pressure, which can lead to death. However, it is very sensitive to antibacterial drugs. If the diagnosis and antibacterial treatment is timely, the bacteria can be killed, and the child's recovery is also very good. Their educational achievements seem to be rarely affected and are almost negligible.

He said, "In contrast, meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae is generally not so severe in the acute phase, but patients are more likely to have brain damage left and are less likely to complete their studies than the average person. Or higher education, it is unlikely to work and live independently. "

Research Overview

In this study, the researchers analyzed the registration data from all over Denmark and identified 2,784 patients. These patients were diagnosed with bacterial meningitis between 1997 and 2007, and were younger than 12 years old at the time of diagnosis. They also identified a group of controls from the general population, paired with date of birth and gender, and siblings of the meningitis group and the control group.

They follow up on the following aspects of everyone: vocational training (such as carpentry, dental technicians and hairdressers), high school education, higher education, financial self-sufficiency and the need for disability pensions. They found that patients with the three types of meningitis were associated with lower educational achievement and self-sufficiency compared with the general population.
