GB/T2423.18-2000 is suitable for determining the suitability of components and equipment for use or storage in salty, humid environments. This standard can be used as a corrosion test, as well as to test the deterioration of non-metallic materials caused by salt spray, and can also be used to assess the performance changes of components and equipment in salt spray environment.
Salt corrosion of metallic materials is electrochemical, while damage to non-metallic materials is caused by complex chemical reactions between the salt and the material. The rate of corrosion damage is highly dependent on the temperature of the oxygenate solution and test sample on the surface of the test sample as well as the temperature and humidity of the environment.
During the test, the spray time is sufficient to allow the test sample to be sufficiently wetted, and the spray is repeated after the test sample has been stored for a period of time under damp heat conditions. Therefore, this salt spray test method is to some extent simulate the natural salt spray environment.
This test is accelerated compared to most conditions of use. But it is not possible to have the same acceleration factor for different types of samples.
The salt spray test consists of two conditions: salt spray and moist heat storage. The test sample is not energized during the spraying process; during humid heat storage, it is usually not energized. This standard is equivalent to the international standard IEC68-2-52 (1984) "Test Kb: Alternating Salt Spray Test Method".
