With the rapid development of the economy, video surveillance has become an essential part of modern life, extending beyond traditional sectors like government and military to various public and private spaces. Initially, the demand for video surveillance was high in these specialized fields, and the role of video optical transceivers has been crucial. Over time, as the technology matured, the cost of video optical transceivers has significantly decreased, making them more accessible and widely used in a variety of applications. Video optical transceivers are now commonly deployed in several key areas: First, in traditional technical anti-monitoring applications, video optical transceivers play a vital role. These systems are typically used in parks, sensitive areas, public spaces, and commercial premises. The primary function is video transmission, with some supporting data control interfaces for lens adjustment. They can also be connected to alarm switches and may include audio monitoring features. Due to cost sensitivity in these environments, single-channel analog or 4-channel optical transceivers are often preferred. However, since standard optical transceivers don’t usually support switch signals, some manufacturers have added dedicated expansion ports. Audio interfaces are typically line-level, requiring connection to an amplifier for both input and output. Therefore, careful consideration must be given to the front and back-end configuration when audio monitoring is required. Additionally, low-end models often only support a 19.2Kb RS485 data rate, which may not work with certain high-speed dome cameras or matrix keyboards using Manchester encoding. Second, in urban road traffic monitoring, video optical transceivers are used extensively. The fiber network here is usually star-shaped, with each intersection connected directly to the central control center. In addition to video backhaul, the system requires high-speed dome control, signaling network management, electronic police data transmission, and real-time traffic monitoring. Some setups even require two-way audio communication. Therefore, the transceivers need multiple data channels (RS232/485) and an audio channel. As electronic police equipment demands higher data rates—ranging from 38.4K to 115.2K, and even 10/100M Ethernet interfaces—the transceiver’s data ports must meet these increasing standards. In the control center, where many receivers are installed, high-density rack-mounted units conforming to 19-inch standards are necessary. Third, in high-grade highway monitoring, video optical transceivers are used primarily at toll stations and critical infrastructure such as bridges and tunnels. These systems require high video capacity, long-distance transmission, and efficient use of fiber resources. In addition to video ports, they often include bidirectional intercoms, telephone interfaces, and Ethernet ports for office automation. To handle large-scale transmission, digital optical transceivers with CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology are commonly used. A single-wavelength device can support up to 16 channels, but with CWDM, eight wavelengths can enable 128-channel video transmission. This complex setup requires thorough planning and simulation by the manufacturer to ensure compatibility and performance. Fourth, in large industrial enterprises, video optical transceivers are essential due to the harsh electromagnetic environment and significant interference. These settings mainly require video backhaul, and a pure video optical transceiver is usually sufficient. Many companies already have internal fiber networks and may want to reuse existing infrastructure. In such cases, it's important to know the original fiber type—whether it's 50/125 or 62.5/125 multimode—and the available fiber cores. Misunderstanding this can lead to compatibility issues when selecting transceivers and pigtails. As technology continues to evolve, video optical transceivers will find new applications across industries, making the market even more dynamic and competitive.
