3D printing solar system: image reveals the mystery of space

OFweek 3D Printing Network. For 68-year-old FAA airframe design and maintenance expert Joel Leathers, 3D printing has become a fascinating technology that truly caught his attention. In fact, Leathers owns eight desktop 3D printers, including one flash cast printer, one FormLabs Form1+, three iBox SLA models, and three Delta-style machines. His passion for 3D printing goes beyond just hobby—his work involves detailed engineering designs and precise modeling. “I used to draw engineering blueprints,” Leathers shared. “I’d convert those designs into STL files using a vernier caliper and then upload them online.” While he didn’t always work directly for the FAA, his background in aerospace engineering gave him the skills to dive deep into 3D printing projects. Recently, Leathers came across an online post where someone was looking for a 3D-printed solar system model to help teach children about space. The idea intrigued him. A solar system model not only demonstrates the movement of celestial bodies but also serves as a mechanical representation of how planetary motion works. It’s a great tool for visualizing gear ratios and orbital mechanics. Inspired by the request, Leathers fired up his usual software—SolidWorks and MOI—and started designing a working solar system. He included the Sun, Earth, Moon, and Venus, along with their orbits. After completing all the digital designs, he spent around four hours printing out the 10 different parts needed for the model. The project required more than just 3D-printed components. To make the model functional, Leathers added a motor that would rotate the gears and simulate the movement of the planets. This way, the model could move automatically, giving a dynamic and engaging demonstration of the solar system's mechanics. Leathers’ dedication to this project shows how 3D printing can be both educational and entertaining. Whether it's for professional use or personal interest, his story highlights the endless possibilities of this innovative technology.
